The war between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing for over a year.
According to some polls, most Russians support the war. However, those findings are hardly accurate because most outspoken Russian activists have embraced silence or left the country. According to different estimates, between 400,000 and 800,000 left Russia after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“We also faced fundamental questions about the commitment to the most basic principles. Would we stand up for the sovereignty of nations? Would we stand up for the right of people to live free from naked aggression? Would we stand up for democracy?”
I say this; you say that. I say there are 20 kids in the class; you say there are 24. I say the restaurant closes on Monday; you say it does on Tuesday. I say the empty lot on the corner is zoned for commercial; you say it is zoned for residential. Vaccines are generally safe and effective; you say they are ineffective and pernicious. I say Biden won; you say, Trump.
Many scholars, Conservatives and non-conservatives alike, have charged that academia has failed to provide enough diverse viewpoints in its teachings and publications. Such politization undermines the principles of honest inquire and academic rigor.
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida drew swift condemnations from establishment Republicans. They are wrong; the governor said what many have been blind and oblivious to, and these hawkish Republican critics have a warped, ill-informed view.
It is warped because DeSantis rightly said that the fight today is not about Kyiv; it’s about Crimea and Donbas, historically disputed territories and, therefore, not of vital interest to the United States.
The deterioration of liberal democracy has become a global phenomenon and, one by one, countries in different parts of the world have fallen victim to assaults on liberal democracy. Israel is only the latest victim of an attempted attack on democracy.
A great deal of literature, films, novels, histories and legends, myths and religious texts, the stories we tell each other in small gatherings on social media or online center on poetic justice. The bad guy or wrongdoer or evil character, seemingly getting away with terrible acts, time and again, to the consternation or even complicity of authorities, gets their rightful dues in the end.
It is difficult to be enthusiastic about the mediocre. Why is getting a C good? Why is making the team but riding the bench, being the eternal “spare,” a cause for happiness? We all want to be part of Lake Wobegon, as Garrison Keeler described it: belonging to a place where “All the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average .”We are not there, and that is not very reassuring. Perhaps worse yet, we are even more distressed when the mediocre is celebrated.
A few months ago, the Biden Administration granted five U.S. oil companies limited authorization to resume pumping oil from Venezuela. The decision came after the Venezuelan government and the opposition reached a humanitarian relief agreement and to resume negotiations to resolve the country’s political crisis, focusing on Venezuela’s 2024 elections.
