In a surprising speech, Senate Majority Leader Charles (“Chuck”) Schumer urged new elections in Israel, suggesting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not up to the task of leading his country. President Biden embraced Senator Schumer’s speech.
There are enough reasons why Netanyahu deserves to be removed by his people, particularly the failure of his government to protect Israel’s southern border on October 7.
However, there is something much more severe in Schumer’s speech.
The current war involving Israel as of 7 October is NOT the Gaza war only. Israel is fighting on four fronts: against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthis of Yemen, pro-Iranian militias, and, in fact, full-fledged armies in Lebanon and Syria.

The Biden administration is putting pressure on the Israeli government to move in the direction of accepting the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza under the control of a revitalized Palestinian Authority (PA).
What is officially known in Israel as the ”swords of iron” war is not yet close [written on 31 December] to its end. In fact, we may be close to the end of the beginning only, but it is not too early to come up with an interim assessment of what has unfolded since 7 October.
Despite recent talks, Venezuela has not been reprimanded for its brazen attempts to violate international law. Last week, the Royal Navy’s HMS Trent appeared off the coast of the South American nation of Guyana. While the vessel arrived for routine training with the Guyanese military, its presence served to ward off threats to Guyanese sovereignty, particularly Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro’s stated desire to absorb the Essequibo region in the country’s western reaches.
