Eight months after 7 October 2023, the well-known political science cliche about; “unintended consequences” of wars seems to be a reality so far as the impact of the war on Israel is. It is NOT Gaza which has become Israel’s main military problem; rather, it is the NORTH, the Israeli-Lebanese border. It is Hizballah, defined usually as a terror organization. Yes, they are, but they are much more than that.
Iran is making moves in the Western Hemisphere, and South America’s dictatorships and “para-dictatorships” are there to help.
The spectacle of a mass antizionist and antisemitic “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” on Columbia University’s central quad and elsewhere has structural predecessors, to be sure, like the Occupy Wall Street movement, but parallels with mass antisemitism require comparison with earlier historical moments. The Occupy Wall Street movement was notably accompanied by a substantial body of theoretical work, whereas the Columbia occupation is supported by little more than a Manichean view of a world divided between oppressor and oppressed peoples.
Free speech is worse than messy. It is unruly, annoying, chaotic, unsightly, loud and intrusive. It is full of individuals who are uninformed or misinformed, full of statements of exaggeration and hyperbole, many crude and false, and taken together, too often bothersome, irritating, overblown, and endlessly repetitive.
President Joe Biden, along with the leaders of Great Britain, France, and Germany, recently rallied around Israel when Iran attacked it.
Such support constituted an inflection point, given Biden’s harsh criticism of Israel’s conduct in the war in Gaza.
No one was shocked when leading American Evangelical Christians – long known for
their stalwart defense of Israeli governments, offered overwhelming support for the Jewish
state’s strong military response to the brutal October 7, 2023, Hamas massacres in southern
Israel. Yet, a close look at data on American Evangelicals from recent years reveals that the
community’s ironclad support of Jerusalem’s government seems poised for a decline in the
coming years. This happens as younger generations seem less unquestioning of Israel – an issue
also faced in the American Jewish community – and the number of self-identified Evangelicals
themselves drops as a percentage of the American population.
