Michael Walzer, a respected Princeton scholar and author of the book Just and Unjust Wars, has
called Israel’s recent pagers’ attacks on Hezbollah fighters “war crimes” in a recent article
published by The New York Times.
Walzer, a committed Zionist who believes that Israel’s current war in Gaza against Hamas is
justified, believes that the operation that caused the explosion of Hezbollah’s operatives’
pager devices to explode was an act of terrorism.
Last weekend was a very tragic one for Israelis and Jews, as the IDF discovered the bodies of six hostages executed by Hamas in order to prevent them from being rescued and returned home.
The murder of the hostages triggered demonstrations against the Israeli government, which were further aggravated by Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech delivered a day after the murders where he reaffirmed the need to control the Philadelphi Corridor. The Corridor is a strip of land approximately 8.5 miles long between Gaza and Egypt, which has been used to smuggle weapons, personnel, and equipment to Hamas for years.
Two Spanish-speaking media outlets interviewed me. In those interviews, I pointed out that I do not see a solution to the Venezuelan crisis except through civil war. Neither interview was published as they were probably considered to be inflammatory.
The Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States 603 US _ (2024) is a landmark ruling with far-reaching implications for the doctrine of Separation of Powers and the scope of presidential immunity. The case centered on former President Donald Trump’s claim that he should be immune from criminal prosecution for actions taken during his presidency.
We have just celebrated the 4th of July, with its parades, speeches, and fireworks announcing our pride, even conceit, that America’s Independence Day is the greatest of all Independence Days, as America is the greatest of all nations, offering its citizens the greatest of all governments. The complexities of that claim – and putting aside its apparent inadequacies, inconsistencies, incoherence, and disappointments – necessarily include a shortlist of what is critical to a view of America’s ascendant greatness. Democracy, prosperity, opportunity, and liberty are on the shortlist, and so is the rule of law.
Eight months after 7 October 2023, the well-known political science cliche about; “unintended consequences” of wars seems to be a reality so far as the impact of the war on Israel is. It is NOT Gaza which has become Israel’s main military problem; rather, it is the NORTH, the Israeli-Lebanese border. It is Hizballah, defined usually as a terror organization. Yes, they are, but they are much more than that.
