Many so-called experts have already closed the chapter titled the Syrian civil war. For them, the war is over, Assad won, and now we can go back to deal with the least non-existent but most talked-about conflict in the Middle East, that is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has been a state sponsor of terrorism. Iran has sought to expand the Islamic revolution and its influence. It cooperates with the Taliban, an extreme Islamist group in Afghanistan, and is also expected to interfere in the recent conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Israel could have a role in reducing tension in the Caucasus and should seek a resolution or a plausible armistice agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
It is arguably the case that momentous events are happening in the Middle East with regard to Israel’s position there. Put in sum, the political outcome of them is the transformation of Israel’s role from being the hated bogey man out of the system of Middle East regional relations to becoming a legitimate actor within this very system.
We often try to make sense of the world, particularly those parts of the world that are unfamiliar, by comparing them to the things more familiar, things we know something about. We say something is like something else, someone reminds us of someone else, that situation is not unlike one we have seen before in certain relevant respects.
